And so it goes. Preparations are underway to challenge the establishment down in Brisbane. Tensions are rising. Conflict emerges from the out-houses. An isolated player, naked, shivering, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT written on his body as a symbol, has emerged into view and is removed in secrecy to a different team elsewhere.
Do you recall the early days, when everything was fresh? The era of early Bazball, of Bazball without brains.
Team architects promise a new start, optimism ahead, support, redemption within a community united in belief in the philosophy.
How did it feel initially? Just men on a balcony enjoying success. Tattoos. Muscles. Determination. Elite male wellness energy. Of course, England’s players will claim they don’t use the label, ironically since it’s not recognized, what did we see?
However, everyone understands the concept. It’s the player executing a stroke so depraved it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of Ben Stokes at his peak, a look that says: thoughtful warrior, strong features, untamed style, truly contemporary you wouldn’t be surprised to notice and see him playing at mid-off shirtless holding a fish.
It’s the opener continuing to have permission to talk in press conferences, resembling a joyful figure smartly dressed, saying stuff like we’re challenging norms. Indeed, the vibe, for quite a long time, was entirely positive.
Development stage. Cohesion maintained via memorization of mantras. These principles may seem irrational as a loyalty check.
Is it just me? The backlash, the outrage, the disappointment following the initial loss appears excessive, overdone. The batting collapsed on the field, as history shows. They were dominated in the field during a brief period as plans unraveled, manipulated by the batsman imitating their style effectively, adaptive to conditions, a man playing with aura.
And now we have this the pile-on, the frustration, the perception of the team as a kind of abomination. The consensus is that England don’t just need to lose, they should be dismantled, to be scoured, destroyed, defeated through sheer skill of the bowler’s action, the low-fi orthodoxies of the veteran, seen enjoying his wickets modestly like he’s just been given a nice new fishing rod. What impact will this have?
Challenges surface because of mistakes. But the cult cannot admit errors. It turns to hostility externally.
Ultimately, a few days before the next match, we are at a critical juncture in the lifespan of this thing. England could quite easily win overseas in a blur of adrenal disruption. Alternatively, they could lose just as quickly. Should they fail it appears we really might be entering the decline.
Ahead of this, several aspects worth saying about this. More than two years ago, at the start, of light and heat, I wrote an article suggesting Bazball was a cult. Criticism followed, which was helpful as it’s known how to confirm that it’s not a closed group is when its acolytes send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages objecting to the questioning of its truths.
The developments recently are equally notable. It seems that hating Bazball has turned into a movement. Social media is furious, disappointed commentators, pictures of upset travelling fans cheated out of three days of cricket, like a room full of investors demanding recourse.
Conversely, we have the wider backdrop of the host’s complex ingrained annoyance with the aggressive tourists, claiming, your cherished traditions and have fostered and nurtured as one way of separating yourself from others, it’s not serious in the end old boy.
Here lies the truth. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon as the game has its own culture. Or rather, the team has long been exclusive, a group, a garden party, an insular community with centuries of opaque and ritualistic cult history defining it. It has long been where entry is limited. It’s the imperial sport of the nation, the early image-makers. And notably, the nation has its own culture, a structure of hidden ranks, a royal family remains.
The players have been enclosed in this system for years. In trying to escape from it, to create a less brutal environment, they are just repeating their upbringing, building another enclosure, a closed circle, but now with a new team and a mentor promoting authenticity if you fit the mold.
Stay present. Embrace challenges. But no matter how fast and far you run, you’re always basically in the same place.
